Your guide to mental wellbeing apps 2022

Happy New Year! So, what goals have you decided to give yourself in 2022? 

Whichever goals you’ve decided to work on, I hope that mental health will be one of your top priorities for this new year. But if you’re not an expert, it can seem a little overwhelming considering the number of apps that exist out there. 

Now, being the wellbeing guru that I am, I can tell you that I have tried EVERY possible app or product you can find on there. 

So, I’ve compiled a list of my favourite apps for each of our BetterSpace pillars (Sleep, Stress Management, Community, Nutrition, Exercise and Meaningful Activities). It’s totally subjective, but it could give you some inspiration to help you on your wellbeing journey this new year. 


Community ~ Be my eyes


What is it?

Be My Eyes is a free app that connects blind and low-vision people with sighted volunteers and company representatives for visual assistance through a live video call. It’s a great use of technology to help those in need. As a volunteer you can help someone check expiry dates, reading instructions or distinguishing colors. 

Why do I personally love it so much? 

What I love about this app is that it makes it very easy to help someone and feel useful without having to invest a huge amount of time or donate any money. I am probably not teaching you anything when I say this, but it feels really good to feel useful for someone.


Nutrition ~ Change 4 Life Food Scanner


What is it?

The Food Scanner app brings food labels to life and helps you make healthier choices. Simply scan the barcode to see how much sugar, saturated fat and salt is in everyday food and drink.

Why do I personally love it so much? 

It’s a simple tool to use when you need a little bit of guidance to eat healthier every day. It’s not always easy to make the right choices, especially when the packages’ marketing can sometimes misleading on whether or not the products are healthy. If you have children, you can also use this tool to teach them which foods are good for them. However, it’s important to stay balanced when using such app. Don’t let it become an obsession.


Exercise ~ MadFit


What is it?

MadFit is a workout Youtube channel created by Maddie Lymburner. She’s created hundreds (or maybe even thousands!) of workouts. From yoga classes, to HIIT workouts to Barre and stretching. You can find so much on her channel! She’s recently launched her own workout App called The Madfit App.

Why do I personally love it so much? 

What I love about MadFit is the diversity of exercises you can find. There are also workouts for different timings: 15 minutes yoga, 20 minutes HIIT, or 10 minutes stretching. 

I actually started exercising at home with MadFit a few years ago, when exercise didn’t mean much to me. And just by doing her 20 minutes HIIT workouts 3 times a week, I could already see my body change.


Sleep ~ Portal


What is it?

The app displays slow-moving video clips of nature scenes on the iPhone or iPad screen while playing real-life sounds from the same location through any AirPlay speakers. A nice relaxing way to drift off after a long day!

Why do I personally love it so much? 

There is a very small detail which makes a huge difference on this app: You can set a timer when you go to sleep and choose to listen to the nature sounds for a certain amount of time. It’s amazing because I have used many other apps which didn’t have this functionality and would end up waking up at 3am thinking “why am I hearing a waterfall when I live in the middle of London?!”. With Portal, you can also set up an alarm clock if you want to wake up to beautiful nature sounds.


Stress Management ~ Happy Feed

What is it?

Happy Feed is a gratitude app. You get a reminder everyday to spend a few minutes writing down 3 things you’ve felt grateful for during the day. You can check your previous gratitude statements, you get a recap of your best moments of the month and the app also sends you motivational quotes throughout the day.

Why do I personally love it so much? 

I honestly never thought practicing gratitude would be so effective! It’s such a simple thing to do, but at the same time incredibly powerful. Writing down what I feel grateful for every day has helped me realise the amount of positive things I have in my life. There are so many things I used to take for granted: A nice text from a friend checking on me, a good night sleep or a treat I’ve had during the day. It feels amazing to take a few seconds to recognize all of the good things that happen in our lives.
