Mantra Chanting to heal Stress and Anxiety

“The Mantra may be used in any life situation and even during our daily routine to relax and quieten the mind. It will bring clarity and the ability to think positively.”

— Sri Tulsidasji

One of my most beautiful times at the yoga ashram was in the evening when all of us would sit together at the end of the asana class with eyes closed chanting ‘AUM’ followed by yoga sutras. It bought a divine sense of calmness and positivity.

What is Mantra…

The word mantra is derived from two Sanskrit roots; manas meaning ‘mind’ and tra meaning ‘tool’. It is a tool devised by the yogis to turn awareness inwards, relax, and quieten the fluctuations of the mind. Mantra chanting helps especially when you are feeling confused, anxious or when you want to break negative thinking patterns. They are an essential meditation tool and reduces the restlessness.

Here are some simple and beautiful mantras to start your journey inwards of realising the true nature of self and tapping into higher cosmic energy.

OM (AUM)

As per old scriptures, OM or AUM as a meditation practice has its own importance, significance and health benefits. It is said that AUM is king of all Mantras. It is a sacred sound generally known as the sound of the universe, unifying everything in the world.

It should ideally be chanted maintaining the correct posture by sitting cross legged,back straight and eyes closed. When practised regularly, it reduces stress and anxiety, heals your heart, strengthens the spinal cord amongst the other numerous benefits.

Shanti (Peace) Mantras

Om Asato Maa Sad-Gamaya |

Tamaso Maa Jyotir-Gamaya |

Mrtyor-Maa Amrtam Gamaya |

Om Shanti Shanti Shantihi ||

Menaing of the mantra:

Lead us from the unreal to the real

Lead us from darkness to light

Lead us from death to immortality

Aum peace, peace, peace!

This amazing peace mantra is taken from Brihadaranyaka Upanishad. It holds several benefits for the mind of the both listener and the one who chants. It helps you move away from negative emotions, offers a deep sense of calm and faith and invokes a sense of peace within you.

Om

Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah

Sarve Santu Niraamayah |

Sarve Bhadraani Pashyantu

Maa Kashchit Dukha Bhaagbhavet |

Om Shanti Shanti Shantihi ||

May all beings be blissful,

May all beings be free from illness.

May all beings see the good within and on the outside,

May no one cause or undergo suffering.

Peace, peace, peace!

This beautiful prayer feels like the need of the hour in these recent times. It is the universal prayer and points towards everyones peace and happiness and elemianting the suffering of all the people.

With everything going on around us, we can never really just think about ourselves and be happy.

Just knowing that we are no different from the universe,we pray that we heal just like the remaining universe. When we pray for everyone, it comes back to us in greater form.

Om Mani Padme Hum

This special Sanskrit chant is pronounced as OHM-MAH-NEE-PAHD-MAY-HUM. It is composed of four words that are often represented on Tibetan prayer flags. It is an ancient Buddhist mantra that, in English, literally translates to “Praise to the Jewel in the Lotus.”

This mantra is believed to connect you with your innately loving and compassionate nature. It intends to say that within all of us is the lotus flower. It may just be covered by mud and muck but reciting the mantra repeatedly and with the right intention can rid of that mud and muck. We can emerge sparkling, pure, compassionate, and wise as the lotus flower itself.

The benefits of mantra chanting are limitless and cannot be attained just through logic and reasoning alone. It needs to be experienced with surrender and faith. It’s easy and its free so next time you are feeling a little low and the mind is free; do try this effective method and experience a bit of bliss within!
